Mental health has now come to the forefront of national debate, along with an amazing new supplement, CBD. Learn what we know about CBD’s effects on mental health disorders and why experts studying the substance think it may be beneficial for people with anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mental health disorders.

Mental health had always been a fringe topic often leaving millions undertreated. Now, recent data reveals that millions Americans are having a serious mental health crisis.

With as many as 1 in 5 Americans having taken an anti-psychotic drug recently, health experts are searching for better solutions to treating mental health disorders.

Could CBD from Hemp oil help? Studies show the supplement has anti-psychotic properties that provide a natural calming, anti-stress effect.

Although we still have much to learn about how CBD Hemp oil works to remedy stress and provide relief from symptoms of anxiety, early studies have yielded promising results.

CBD’s Effects on Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a subjective experience, meaning no two people have the same interpretation of it.

Stress is often the main cause of anxiety, but disorders affecting physical and mental health can also trigger symptoms.

CBD’s anti-anxiety effect in animals has been seen numerous times over in the laboratory. In humans, only small, short-term studies on CBD and anxiety have been completed, but early results have produced astonishing findings.

CBD, or cannabidiol, seems to relax the symptoms of anxiety by calming the natural stress response and moderating other vital body functions.

Its high safety profile compared to traditional anti-anxiety medicines such as benzodiazepines has researchers studying how it affects many different anxiety disorders.

In 2015, a paper published in the journal of Neurotherapeutics presented a scientific assessment of CBD’s effects on anxiety in preclinical, human experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies.

Their papers concludes by suggesting CBD as a potential treatment for multiple anxiety disorders, that CBD clearly has an anti-anxiety effect, and that further studies are needed to figure out exactly how to use CBD clinically in the treatment of mental health disorders.

Currently, an 8-week pilot study is being organized that aims to examine CBD’s benefits in anxiety disorders. The study began in August 2018 and is estimated to be complete by October of 2020.

CBD’s Effects on Mental Health

What does it mean to suffer from mental illness? Many would imagine severe psychiatric disorders or insanity, but mental health problems are much more prevalent than we’d like to admit.

Scientists are studying CBD’s effects on mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, psychosis, eating disorders, PTSD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and others.

Here’s what we’ve learned about how CBD oil could be beneficial in the most common mental health disorders.

CBD & Depression

research for treatment of mental illnessesStudies showed that CBD binds with a neuro-receptor called, 5-HT1A, which is the same receptor targeted by most modern psychiatric medications.

The most recent advancements in CBD and depression studies come from researchers in Brazil.

They showed that a single dosage of CBD exhibited an antidepressant-like effect on the same day of treatment and maintained the beneficial effect for a week. 1

Thousands of people taking CBD Hemp Oil claim that it helps relieve symptoms of stress-related anxiety, helping them sleep and function better.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD rates have increased dramatically and are a common condition for anyone who has experienced, witnessed, or even just perceived a life-threatening trauma or injury.

Nightmares, anxiety, mood swings, depression, violence, and even suicidal thoughts are among the symptoms of PTSD and studies suggest CBD may be able to help.

CBD and PTSD are one of the more extensively studied mental health disorders, and a growing amount of scientific evidence suggests CBD may be beneficial for those suffering from the symptoms of this disorder.

Studies show that CBD affects the way that our brain organizes and connects memories with emotions, in trauma; this is referred to as fear-memory.

Other experiments have further confirmed that CBD’s effect on endocannabinoid levels, such as anandamide or 2-AG, could potentially be beneficial for those with PTSD.

We still have much to learn about how stress and trauma affect our mental health and how to manage the effects of it. For now, CBD researchers are one hopeful path toward safer, more effective medicines.
